Serena Williams has been eliminated from China Open by Russian Nadia Petrova 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5). Despite the loss, Williams will officially re-take the No. 1 spot starting next week. Russia's Dinara Safina held the No. 1 spot until now.

Meanwhile, French tennis star Amelie Mauresmo is planning to retire at the end of the season. She is saying she lost her desire to compete, but does not want to rush things, taking her time to think over what to do with her career.

A local sensation -- Peng Shuai of China has reached quarterfinals, having eliminated Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic. Rafael Nadal and Robin Soderling are through to the quaterfinals as well.
