Serena Williams Wins 2009 Wimbledon Title, Remains World's No. 2
Serena Williams won the 2009 Wimbledon ladies' singles title against her sister - the defending 2008 Wimbledon champ Venus Williams at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London, UK, on July 4. Yesterday's win is the third Wimbledon title for Serena Williams, bringing her total Grand Slam win tally to eleven. Serena won 7-6 (7/3), 6-2, which was a close repeat of last year's matchup between the two sisters, when Venus Williams beat Serena 7-5, 6-4. Despite winning Wibledon this year, Serena Williams still remains world's No. 2 behind Russia's Dinara Safina, who sustained an embarrassing loss against Venus Williams in the semifinals on July 2. Yesterday, Serena said she was "shocked" that she still remains in No.2 position after her strong win in the finals and Safina's heavy loss in the semis. Serena Williams holds three Grand Slam titles: 2008 US Open, 2009 Australian Open and now 2009 Wimbledon, while Safina holds none. Serena's reaction was that of a shock.
"If it disappointed me I'd go crazy just thinking about it, I think anyone really could, but it's just shocking," she said.
"But whatever, it is what it is, I'd definitely rather be number two and hold three Grand Slams in the past year than be number one and not have any."
The controversy remains, but the WTA rankings favor the player who is the most consistent throughout the year.
The ranking system currently favours the player who is the most consistent throughout the tennis calendar. Hence Safina who has won after appearing in four tournament finals on the WTA, claiming two victories and reaching two Grand Slam finals.
Despite the rightfulness of the women's current rankings, the seeming inadequacy of the WTA ranking system has aroused a lot of criticism in the wake of yesterday's women's final.

A photo that I think captures the athletic prowess of a great champion.

This was the only coverage I saw of the whole tournament. I thought it was momentous that two sisters were in the final together.
