Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada (2007/10/27) — The Simon Fraser University (SFU) Clan christen their new venue in a 73-41 domination of local arch nemesis University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds at West Gymnasium in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) varsity women’s basketball.
The defending national champions raised their 2006-2007 CIS title banner in a pre-game ceremony prior to opening a 23-point first half lead over UBC, and they never looked back.
SFU devastated the Thunderbirds with a multi-faceted attack contributed by five players scoring in double-digits.
Fourth-year forward Courtney Gerwing finished with a game-high 15 points ahead of fellow starting teammates sophomore guard Robyn Buna (13), sophomore forward Kate Hole (12), and senior point guard Lani Gibbons (10).
Paced by fifth-year forward Julie Little’s 10 points, UBC was outmatched in committing 28 turnovers exacerbated by its leading scorer senior guard Erica McGuinness struggling through an unusually poor shooting performance of 1-for-13 field goals (including 0-for-4 three-pointers).
Simon Fraser will look to carry the success of their home-opening victory on the road to take on the University of Brandon Bobcats (Nov. 2), and the University of Regina Cougars (Nov. 3).
Over the same weekend, the Thunderbirds will look to bounce back playing away games in Alberta versus the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (Nov. 2), followed by the University of Calgary Dinos (Nov. 3).
