Shea Stadium has finally been completely torn down.

Shea Stadium demolition crews have been working for several months to tear the former home of the New York Mets down piece by piece. Today, the final remnants of the stadium were razed to make room for a parking lot that will be used by fans when the attend Mets games at the team's new home, Citi Field.

Several Mets fans stood in the parking lot to take pictures and video of the final demolition. Some celebrated by chanting "Let's Go Mets!" Others were more reflective.

Joe DeAngelis, a construction worker who has been a Mets fan for 40 years, fought back tears as he stared at the pile of rubble. Even though he believed the stadium’s last moments were fairly anticlimactic — there were no explosions or wrecking balls as in some other stadium demolitions — they felt just as painful.

“It’s like watching a slow death,” DeAngelis said. “All we can do now is reminisce.”
