Sidney Crosby awarded Order of Nova Scotia

Sidney Crosby was just named to the Order of Nova Scotia, and became the youngest awardee in the Order's history; but, instead of glory he's getting backlash–from commenters.

Seems that some readers don't think that a hockey player deserves to share the award with people who: tried to get compensation native residential schools survivors [Nora Bernard]; restored Pier 21 [Ruth Golbloom]; contributed to Nova Scotia's economy [Michael MacNeil]; researched multiple sclerosis [Dr Thomas Murray]; treated injured coal miners and is trying to cure cancer [Dr Mahmood Naqvi].

just b/c he can play hockey??? I didn't realize the order of NS is given to anyone that does their job well.

Lame lame lame.......this kid has done nothing to deserve this award.

There is one person who tried some reasoned criticism:

As for his hockey skill can't critize those, but I do think at 21 and just a couple of years under his belt it may be a bit premature to grant such a reconition to him for his hockey playing.

I don't care what anyone else says - I love Sid the Kid. Congrats to him.

Yes, I'm from Pittsburgh, so I might be a bit biased, but what I have witnessed is someone who has a great degree of natural talent, but never rests on it.  He always strives to be better.  So what if he shares an award with other deserving people?  It doesn't lessen their contributions.

Harsh criticism!  I thought the award was given to people who have distinguished themselves in many fields of endeavour and have brought honor and prestige to themselves and to Nova Scotia.  Sid is a great role model for kids in all of North America - his work ethic and devotion to his sport are unequaled.  He is a great ambassador for Canada and hockey.  If being one of the best hockey players in the world isn't "distinguished", nothing is!  Because of Sid a lot of folks in the US can actually find Nova Scotia on a map.

Sid the Kid is one heck of talented Hockey Player. That the majority of us crazed hockey fans recognize.  I fail to comprehend with all respect why he is deserving of such a Honour. I spent 9 years living in Nova Scotia and understand decisions aren't made overnight in that conservative minded Province. Things are planned out and discussed in length there. So why the decision to award young  Mr. Crosby with of the Order of Nova Scotia seems a little hasty.

By the way if your're looking for place to visit and enjoy life go to Canada's Ocean Playground. Head for Nova Scotia. Feast on their culture.

Take care and thank you for your story Jason.

Thanks for the Good Stuff Brian! I'm not sure where I sit on this story. On one hand he is an amazing player and on the other it's obviously for people who are making significant contributions to bettering the world (which could be argued).

I think I'll check out previous awardees and see what the precedent is.

I think its a great honor to him and the people of novia scotia can be very proud of him! I know the people of my hometown of pitttsburgh were when he got a local honor "the dapper dan award"

The anti sid crosby fans are just jealous and wish they had his skill and maturity!!!
