My father George "Clare" Martin served on the original HMCS Preserver during World War II. The ship caught fire in St. John's Nfld harbour, "Clare" (a signalman) was signaling the fire was out of control and the ship would steam for open water. If the supply ship blew up, the high octane gas on board the supply ship would blow St. John's to bits. Just at the narrows of the harbour, they managed to get the fire under control. After the war George "Clare" Martin played with the Stanley Cup winning Detroit Red Wings in 1949-50. Well done Sidney in bringing the Stanley Cup back to the "Preserver."cjm
