The Nanaimo Silly Boat Regatta marked its 25th year of helping the community this weekend. The two day event is a fun way to raise money for the non-profit Nanaimo Child Development Centre, with has as its mandate promotion of optimum development for children aged 0 to 19 years. Over the past 25 years the Silly Boat Regatta has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to aid challenged children.
While the goals are serious, the Silly Boat Regatta is about having fun, and providing family entertainment. The crowd that turned out to watch the silly boats at Nanaimo harbour was estimated at about 10 000 on Sunday.
This year the two day Silly Boat Regatta had a theme of Gilligan's Island. A local businessman had purchased the original Minnow and has had it lovingly restored. The Minnow added yet another touch of whimsy to the day. There were look alike contests to see who looked most like the Skipper, Gilligan, etc.
Most of the silly boats made it through the race course without sinking, but few of the participants returned to shore with dry clothes.
