Hockey Scores

The frontrunner in the contest for the new Hockey Night in Canada song is a compilation of animal noises and banging sounds. Sort of like a K-Fed song. This creation ("song" is perhaps overstepping it) has been floated to the top of the heap by a multi-faceted social networking campaign. After the Canadial Broadcasting Company dropped the ball on the rights to the original tune, the floodgates have opened to incoming would-be theme songs. CBC is trying to stay on message about how this is a good thing, but click below and have a listen...

Aube created "Hockey Scores" as a joke, then posted a thread in the Something Awful forums last Thursday, asking for the goons there to help make it popular. (There, he more honestly described the song as "mostly comprised of cat and sheep sounds, baby cries, and gunshots/explosions.") A week later, with a spectacular animation on YouTube and an advocacy group on Facebook to further the cause, "Hockey Scores" is dominating the competition: almost every other theme uploaded can't get a rating higher than two out of five, and commenters on Aube's theme—those not in on the joke—are understandably confused, distressed, and furious.
CBC is just not ready for this, huh? Aside from flailing on the original theme, they don't seem capable of dealing with the no-holds-barred world of user-generated content.

I have to admit, that song is not catchy.

jordan, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Granted the CBC dropped the ball -- but is that song really worth $2.5M? I don't think so. We'll see if it makes a difference. As for the new song why don't they just buy The Hockey Song? Stompin' Tom offered it to them.

No doubt- they better bring back the old theme; i can't believe they sold the rights to it in the first place. All these 'would be theme songs' on CBC  are a joke; at the rate CBC is going they might as well get Celine Dion to sing "If You Asked Me To" as the theme. It will serve as a prayer that a miracle might, or probably might NOT happen!

OMG - that is just the worst thing I have ever heard! Could it be any more annoying!?
