The Proteas did not start off the ODI series as they would have like to. With the first game being washed out without a ball being bowled, the Proteas would have been itching to get England by the throat straightaway. But that was not to be as the hosts were caught off-guard by an English team that came up with a spirited performance to go 1-up in the series. Despite the half-centuries from Hashim Amla and Alviro Petersen, South Africa could only manage 250 runs on the board. In reply, England quite easily overhauled the target thanks to the efforts of Collingwood and Trott. The Proteas though would quickly look to put this defeat behind and ensure that they come up with a better all-round performance as they hope to level the series.
