Sri Lanka, after consecutive Twenty20 defeats, and New Zealand, after a 50-over warm-up defeat to Sri Lanka A on Sunday, will attempt to kick-start the Compaq Cup on Tuesday,India Also Join the Party. though the weather threatens to be a dampener. Scattered thunderstorms are predicted for each of the days this week and a short four-game tournament, already being criticised for its duration and practicality, needs to be competitive throughout to silence growing criticism of the 50-over game's future.

Sri Lanka v New Zealand
Sri Lanka won by 97 runs
0.6 to Dilshan, gone! Not so lucky on this occasion, again a short delivery outside the off stump and this time the ball clips the inside edge and crashes into the stumps. Once again Dilshan was looking to cut it away behind point and was beaten by the lack of pace. 4/1
1.4 to Jayawardene, Bond too joins the party! short of a good length delivery, was bit wide outside the off stump and Jayawardene tries to run it down but is beaten by the extra bounce and ends up playing it straight to Ros Taylor at first slip. 5/2
7.4 to Jayasuriya, that's the end of that! short and wide outside the off stump, Jayasuriya goes for the cut, ball clips the top edge and flies straight to Butler at third man who nicely settles under it. Sri Lanka three down and in trouble here 22/3
47.5 to Mathews, bowled'm! good length delivery on the middle and off stump line, Mathews looks to run it down fine but fails to make contact and the ball crashes into the woodwork. End of a fine partnership 196/6
15.5 to Sangakkara, Butler picks up Sangakkara as he looks to put the delivery somewhere on the onside, miscues it high in the air forward of square leg, Oram runs in and takes a good catch. 38/4
48.5 to Samaraweera, Samaraweera's fine innings comes to an end. Full and on the stumps, Samaraweera looks to scoop it away on the leg side but fails to make contact and the ball crashes into the stumps. 204/7
25.3 to Kandamby, Kandamby perishes! flat delivery outside the off stump, Kandamby comes down the track and hits it away on the leg side but fails to keep it down, Ros Taylor at short midwicket dives across and takes an excellent low catch. 69/5
4.1 to Guptill, edged and gone! short of a good length delivery, pitched in the channel outside the off stump and shaping away a touch - Guptill stands tall on the back-foot and drives hard, ball clips the outside edge and goes straight to Sangakkara behind the stumps 5/2
4.5 to Taylor, three down! Kulasekara picks up another one! good length delivery, the one that nips back in. Taylor stays back and tries to flick it away on the leg side but fails to make contact and the ball crashes into the pad. Umpire Ashoka de Silva had no hesitation whatsoever 7/3
1.2 to Ryder, Thushara strikes! that's the start they wanted - good length delivery and this one nipped back in sharply after pitching outside the off stump. Ryder never picked it up and was beaten comprehensively, loud appeal and up goes the finger. 2/1
18.2 to BB McCullum, cleaned up! something had to happen - good length delivery on the stumps, McCullum makes room and swings hard but fails to make contact and the ball crashes into the stumps. New Zealand in deep trouble here at 37 for 4. 37/4
18.5 to Oram, another one bites the dust! good length delivery outside the off stump, shaping away a touch - Oram plays at it well away from his body and ends up with a faint edge. Sangakkara goes low and takes it cleanly. New Zealand 5 down. 41/5
18.6 to NL McCullum, bowled'm! good length delivery on the middle and off stump line, a slinger of a delivery, Nathan McCullum pushes forward to defend and is beaten for pace and the off stump is pegged back. Malinga on a hat-trick here. 41/6
36.1 to Butler, all over! It's a Malinga special, full and on the stumps, Butler fails to get his bat down in time and the ball crashes into the stumps. Sri Lanka win by 97 runs 119/10
