The US Speedskating team has a new sponsor: Stephen Colbert. The Comedy Central told US Speedskating Dan Jansen that he would sponsor the team on his show The Colbert Report. Just like everything with Colbert, it's hard to tell what's real and what's fake, but in this case it appears that Colbert will indeed be the biggest sponsor of the US Speedskating team at the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver.

Colbert decided to pony up some cash after Jansen told him about the team's biggest sponsor, DSB Bank NV, declared bankruptcy last month. Colbert offered to step up and fill in the void left by the defunct Dutch bank. Colbert has asked fans to donate money to the team via his Colbert Nation website. Thanks to the fan's efforts, The US Speedskating team's uniforms will be emblazoned with "Colbert Nation."

The Stephen Colbert-US Speedskating sponsorship could be a real boon for the team. After all, Colbert is a cult figure with a huge following who may not always be tuned into sports.

Colbert is dedicated to making sure that the US Speedskating will medal at the 2010 Games in Vancouver. The only down side for Colbert?

"It still tragically involves a lot of Canadians," the comedian said. "It's kind of unseemly how many Canadians I'm going to have to be dealing with."

Of course, this isn't Colbert's first foray into sports. The Saginaw Spirit, a Michigan-based minor league hockey team, named their mascot after Colbert.
