Steve McNair Found Dead: Shot to Death

Steve McNair, former Quarterback from the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans is dead at the age of 36.

NewsChannel5 from Nashville is reporting that Steve was found with a female victim in an apparent double homicide. The woman has been identified, but her name is not being released at this time.

It is not however, Mechelle Cartwright, who is Steve's wife.

Police said McNair suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head in downtown Nashville.

The incident happened at 2nd South & Lea Avenue in downtown Nashville.

There are no suspects at the moment, but some people have been taken to a nearby police station for questioning.

His brother Fred has confirmed his death, but has not provided any more details.

Steve owned a restaurant after his professional football career, Steve McNair's Gridiron9, and he had plans to open another.

Steve LaTreal McNair (born February 14, 1973 in Mount Olive, Mississippi), nicknamed Air McNair, is a former American football quarterback in the National Football League. He was originally drafted by the Houston Oilers third overall in the 1995 NFL Draft. He played college football at Alcorn State.

McNair was selected to the Pro Bowl three times and was the Co-AP NFL MVP in 2003. He died on July 4, 2009.

He spent 13 seasons in the NFL, mostly with the Tennessee Titans, but he spent his last two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He retired in April 2008.

Nashville, TN Police, according to FOX News, are calling this a murder suicide.  A woman was found int the apartment.  Although the police did not identify anyone, local TV stations have identified that Steve McNair was one of the victims.

I don't think the suggestion is that he committed suicide, but that she shot him and then turned the gun onto herself. He was shot multiple times. He could not have done that and then shot her. The gun was found in the home UNDER her. How did that happen any way other than a murder-suicide?

What a shock.

Air McNair is a legend around these parts.  I feel like I've lost a friend.

How sad.

Local reactions

“He set goals. You could tell he was serious about what he was doing, and I knew he was going to do something with himself,” Williams, 32, said.
Despite making it to the NFL, McNair never forgot his Mississippi roots and his old friends.

“He was a down-to-earth country person,” Williams said. “Every time he came back home, he’d throw (a party) around the way and he’d invite everybody.”
Williams said his heart stopped for a second when heard the news of McNair’s violent death.

“It hurt me to my heart. I thought it couldn’t be Steve,” he said. “For him to be such a good guy and for something like this to happen, it’s going to affect a lot of people.”

I don't follow football, so I had to look him up.  Steve was a very handsome man, and his smile was genuine and warm.  My condolences to his family and all who loved him.
