Stratford: London2012 Olympic Park 'Police' grill photographer
Paranoia over security surrounds the London Olympic Site: recently a cyclist was questioned by Olympic Park 'police' for taking photographs.
Here the outraged cyclist reports on his heavy-handed experience at Stratford on Flickr:-
"...We are on a very busy road, (used to be London Transport 308 Route, with the former Clay's Lane estate where the earth mountain is in the background) linking stratford with the A12 - hence heavy coach traffic. No signs banning photography as was the norm in some public parts of Communist states. Off to the left the 2012 Olympic park. (behind a very high fence).
The photo (which depicted 2 National Express Coaches) caused two "Olympic park" police in police uniforms and "name badges" to screech to a halt in a white POLICE-marked 4WD and grill me about terrorism,my opinions on the Olympics . Thought --will camera be confiscated from visitors to the 2012 Olympics? (er wouldn't a terrorist wait until 2012?) etc etc. I did point out that about 8 million people have photographed the Olympic site from the Greenway observation point",
When I was there a week back, I also didn't see any signs saying 'No Photography' either. As you may know, I am often cycling along the Greenway, reporting on the update of the improvements of the cyclepath. In view of this, will Olympic tourists have their cameras confiscated or worse, be arrested if they take photographs of the Site, with their coach bus in it? Are they better off at home? Surely the Olympics is supposed to benefit local Stratford residents too?

If you are a Stratford resident and have been taking photographs, what do you think of all this? Were you grilled too?

Just had a message from the cyclist who is concerned that 'as a regular visitor' it may make matters worse.

Another cyclist said this: "In itself photographing the bus isn't illegal. Anyone stopped and searched must not delete the images as that is actually illegal (the police will be encouraging the destruction of evidence for one and will have no case) as it is the destruction of property iirc. If the police are that concerned it can go to court and be challenged."
I think I am going to keep a copy of Section 44 whenever I go cycling!
It was fortunate that the cyclist wasn't 'tasered', you never know what these 'police' do nowadays.

I think it is unreasonable that there are so 'No Photography' signs.
