Sugar Bowl 2012 Video: Should Danny Coale Touchdown Catch Count?
Danny Coale Almost Made an Amazing Touchdown Catch in Overtime of the 2012 Sugar Bowl? Should the Catch Have Counted? Check Out the Danny Coale Sugar Bowl 2012 Overtime Video
Well, this will be talked about for a while, at least in Virginia. The end of the 2012 Sugar Bowl was filled with more than a little controversy as the Hokies appeared to have scored a touchdown only to have the call reversed.
Virginia Tech receiver Danny Coale appeared to have made a diving touchdown catch that would have given the Hokies a lead in overtime. After further review, officials ruled that Coale did not make the catch.
No doubt, the debate about the Danny Coale overtime catch, or non-catch as it were, will go on for years.
Here is the Danny Coale Sugar Bowl 2012 Overtime gif.
Video will be posted shortly.

One of the Best CATCHES I have seen in any CFB or NFL game anytime!! IT WAS A CATCH and no I am not a VT fan!! A catch is a catch and the ref who orginally made the call was 100% correct!! The reply is suppose to be 100% without a doubt in order to over turn the call on the field!! THIS WAS NOT!!

The Refs on the field are part of the game, and therfore make real-time decisions. They sometimes make mistakes and so we have the review process. The Ref in the box does not have that level of pressure, and he should not be afforded the same level of induldgence. To change a ruling on the field he needs irrefutable evidence of a missed call. I'm not a VT fan but show me the irrefutable evidence. Otherwise that call not only cost a team, a conference, the fans, the coaches, etc., it cost a young man, who played his heart out, a touchdown and quite possibly the game. That's the travesty. When the fix starts causing the same problems it was designed to stop. Irrefutable?!?

sorry but that was not a catch. he didnt pull the tip of the ball back in. the tip hits the ground when he does and the wr must not allow for any part of the ball to hit the ground when going to the ground. right call, no td.

You need to read the rules again. The ball can hit the ground as long as the receiver maintains complete control of the ball and the ground does not aide in the catch.

mgoblog.com/sites/mgoblog.com/files/Screenshot3.gifHe did not have the ball secured, it was slipping through his forearms and away from his body. Not secure, sorry. By rule it can't be a catch, that sucker was thrust into his body by the ground, which GAVE him control. You can see a more detailed look at that GIF and the background for it here:mgoblog.com/content/picture-pages-was-it-catch

I don't know if it's a catch or not. The ball hits the ground but appears to be in his control. It clearly wasn't a trap. IMO you gotta go with the ruling on the field.

It was a catch. His elbow hit the ground before the ball did. He clearly had control of the ball. A lot was lost night for Danny Coale and the Hokies...not just a win....

You are blind if you think the elbow hit the ground before the ball did.

All I have to say is someone upstairs didn't want VT to win this game. That young man made a beautiful catch and this call made me question bowl games being fixed.

As my husband and I were anxiously awaiting on the decision of the officials on this obvious touchdown, my husband said "If this touchdown is reversed, that is proof these college games are fixed/rigged." We are die hard Hokie fans. The entire Hokie Nation was robbed of the opportunity to win but it was terrible for Danny Coale. He is a senior and this was his last college game. Because we are fortunate enough to live in a time where there is video review, I'd love to hear someone stop forward and explain their decision, frame by frame, because no one can dispute this wasn't a touchdown....not someone with a decent set of eyes and an unbiased brain.
