The Lights Went Out at the 2013 Super Bowl. What Happened? We Don't Know But Some People Made Jokes About It

As you noticed, the lights went out at the Superdome during Super Bowl 2013.  The CBS broadcast was affected as were lights in the stadium.

Apparently half the power in the stadium was out.

What exactly happened?

Bloomberg reported: "NFL officials say "power surge" knocked out power at New Orleans Superdome during third quarter of Super Bowl."

Reuters notes that the NFL video description said "Blown circuit" to blame for power outage in second half of the Super Bowl.

CBS's Steve Tasker reporter that the blackout was caused by an outside power feed that suddenly went dead.

Later in the night, AP reported that "Superdome power outage occurred when sensing equipment detected an "abnormality.”

Some have other theories, however. Some joked that Beyonce blew out the power in the stadium.

One TSN producer joked "Finally some good news for the 49ers."

Drew Franklin joked: "This is exactly how my trip to New Orleans went. It was all smooth for a couple hours and then the blackout happened."

Steve Tasker of CBS said the delay would be more than 20-30 minutes.

Here is video of the blackout
