LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS: GB women's hockey going for gold

Second-half goals from Alex Danson, Crista Cullen and Sarah Thomas earned Team GB a well-deserved 3-1 victory over New Zealand to secure the bronze medal in the women's hockey event at London 2012.

The home side went into the game off the back of a gut-wrenching 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals.

But they showed great poise against a talented Kiwi team, who only lost on penalties in their semi against the favourites the Netherlands, with three penalty-corner strikes after a scoreless first period.

Danson fired home from the edge of the area for the first before Cullen doubled the lead just a few minutes later.

Thomas then clipped home from close range with eight minutes left to all but end the game, before Stacey Michelsen pulled a goal back late on for the New Zealanders.

The result is just reward for Team GB's run to the last four, which came after some impressive performances in the preliminaries - including a superb display to beat Japan 4-0, a 5-3 defeat of South Korea, and a 3-0 win over Belgium.

Gold will be decided in this evening's match at the Riverbank Arena when Argentina take on the Dutch.
