June 6, 2011- The NBA (National Basketball Association) was founded on this day 65-years ago on June 6, 1946 in New York City at the old Hotel Commodore (now the Grand Hyatt).

The NBA at 65 is the leagues most historic anniversary milestone since the NBA turned 50 on June 6, 1996. The NBA at 50 was highlighted by a list of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players of all-time.

The NBA began as an 11-team league that was known back in 1946 as the BAA (Basketball Association of America). The BAA merged with the rival NBL (National Basketball League) in 1949 and the league was renamed the NBA.

The Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks played Game-3 of the 2011 NBA Finals last night on the eve of the NBA turning 65. The Heat defeated the Mavericks 88-86 to take a 2-1 series lead.

The NBA at 65 is celebrated in conjunction with NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month) that has been proclaimed since 2009.

The City of New York where the NBA was founded has proclaimed June 2011 as NBHHCM with a Proclamation from Mayor Michael Bloomberg to honor the 65th Anniversary of the NBA being founded.

The City of Toronto is where the first NBA game was played on November 1, 1946 has also proclaimed June Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month to honor the 65th Anniversary of the NBA turning 65. The New York Knicks were the visiting team and the Toronto Huskies hosted the historical first game. The Knicks defeated the Huskies 68-66.

The New York Knicks and Boston Celtics are the only two NBA franchises from the "Original 11" teams of 1946 that have remained in their original NBA team cities.

Congratulations to the NBA on its 65th birthday.
