Hushovd win step 6 of Tour de France 2009

Stage six of the Tour, Gerone to Barcelona, a 175 km distance saw Thor Hushovd riding for Cervelo win the stage today.  It looked like David Millar riding for Garmin would win and gain the yellow jersey for awhile, but it was not to be.  David Millar led the breakaway group for about 25 km but was swept up by the peloton at the last second.

The overall standings of the first three riders in the Tour remain the same Cancellara, Armstrong, Contador with only twenty two hundredths of a second separating first and second.  Team Astana remains the leading team.

Weather was a factor in the race agains today only this time it was rain making the road surface treacherous.  A nasty crash at a roundabout 18 km from the finish saw Michael Rogers riding for Columbia get up slowly.  He finished the race.  Another crash on the slippery surface took down another group of riders, splitting the peloton into two groups. The second  one came in more than a minute behind.

Tom Boonan  fell in the crash and was out of the sprint again today.  Yesterday Boonan had two flats which took him out of contention for the green jersey.  He did finish the race.

The polka dot jersey will be worn today by Stephane Auje riding for Team Confides.

Tomorrow the Tour moves from Barcelona into the Principality of Andorra a distance of 224 km in mountainous terrain.
