Trade Doc, Waive AJ and for god sake let JP walk
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher A.J. Burnett has raised a lot of interest amongst opposition throughout the league, especially after the Cleveland Indians traded CC Sabathia to the upstart Milwaukee Brewers organization making A.J., by default the best available pitcher on the open market.
With teams across Major League Baseball falling over themselves to acquire the Jays 50/50 pitcher (80-75) whose absence from the roster of the 2003 Florida Marlins has been cited as a contributing factor in the Marlins stunning world series win, let just consider the curfuffel that would ensue if the Jays where to add the name of consummate professional and Cy Young award winner Roy Halliday to the list of player available on the trading block.
The Jays, with a little bit of shrewd negotiating and A.j's suspect pitching record could probably land a significant stepping stone, like Yankees outfielder Melky Cabrera but with the likes of Roy Halliday used as trade bait the Jays could easily bypass the stepping stones and proceed directly to the top of prospect mountain.
Unfortunately the Blue Jays are saddled with a lame duck GM, JP Ricciardi , whose hands may not be tied but they should be hand-cuffed, Ricciardi is currently in no position to move the franchises star player and is likely expected to do nothing more than perform a little routine maintenance well his contract runs its course.
I think it wisdom to strike while the iron is hot.
