Update Septembre 23: All special rules and regulations are gone. Traffic is as usuall, before the games. Traffic jams are back and smog too. I guess we are getting the same environmental show in 2010 at the Sjanghai World Expo 2010.

Update: The latest photos of the sky in Beijing from just one hour before the start of the Opening Ceremony are clear: there is no clean air in Beijing. So all the work and spendings around 13 billion dollars on this issue didn't work afterall. See photos 080808

Of course the IOC praised the Chinese for their efforts and as far as the IOC is in charge: the air is clean, so let the games begin. See: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/olympics/2008-08/08/content_6914932.htm

Added a photo of the Birds Nest on a nice sunny day with a blue sky. This photo was released by the officials. Of course, that was the idea how it should be today.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is taking a huge gamble with the health of athletes competing in Beijing – and risking its own reputation and finances. It is leaving itself and other Olympic bodies vulnerable to legal action by competitors who experience adverse reactions to the city's notorious pollution. Source: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/aug/08/olympics2008.china1

Update: U.S. track cyclists arrived in Beijing Tuesday wearing face masks to protect them against air pollution. The air was actually clearer in Beijing Tuesday than in recent days. (Aug. 5).

Update: with only a few days to go the smog is still there. See latest video August 5th smog around Birds Nest Stadium. I think those mask are not such a bad idea. Or will rain bring the solution?

While Beijing is doing all that is possible to clean the air in the city during the Olympic Games, the US Olympiv Committee started to distribute secretly developed high tech mask to all olympic sporters. Source: Wall Street Journal

So these sporters have to decide to wear these mask to protect themselve for the air pollution in Beijing. What should happen when the USA team decides to wear these masks during the Opening Ceremony?

It will be a big smash in the face for the Chinese. That should be a real insult. What is USA team going to do on August 8th??

Found out that the British team is also provided with masks. See picture.

Meanwhile the organizing committee is going for green where possible. So in the last week they received 5000 official eco-friendly cars. Beijing made big progression with their mass-transit systems. Three new subway lines were opened and several battery-powered buses will take the Olympic Lanes on the highways.

Wearing the mask to the opening ceremony would be one way to accelerate the friendly competition...

Milieunet, I like this story. It's good stuff.

It will be interesting to see what happens during the Opening Ceremony. I guess since they've been given it, they should wear it no? Might make things a bit awkward though...

Milieunet, I like this story. It's good stuff.

It should be interesting to watch.

Hopefully the Chinese government will continue to go green long after the games have ended.

Despite of amid heavy clouds and pollutions...also tight security is in place....The ceremony set to begin, world leaders to attend the opening ceremony.

The ceremony will be watch by 4b viewers worldwide...90,000 people will be watch in "Birds Nest" stadium, envolved 10,000 performers at Beijing Olympics as the capital prepares for the opening ceremony.

It's really exciting!!!
