Try a Different Sport, Go To a Lacrosse Game
Saturday night I attended a Western Lacrosse Association game played by young men. The sparse but enthusiastic crowd cheered on the local Timbermen as well as the powerhouse New Westminster Salmonbellies.
Lacrosse as it is now played is a modern version of an indigenous N. American game. It is played with a stick and a ball with the object of putting the lacrosse ball into the opponent's net. The main rule of the game seems to be "no touching the ball with your hand". Other than that it is a rough and tumble game with few apparent rules. You can apparently whack your opponent with your stick and push and shove them too.
BC has had a league for over 100 years with the Salmonbellies charting up 120 years of history. The Salmonbellies showed their depth of strength and skill Saturday night, defeating the Nanaimo Timbermen by a hefty 12 to 3.
While this game hasn't reached the popularity of hockey, try it out this summer. It's often played in the hockey arenas on the bare concrete. Schedules are published on the league's home page.
