Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (2007/9/15) — The University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds won their 2007 season home-opener defeating the University of Victoria (UVic) Vikes 4-1 in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) women's varsity soccer at Wolfson Field.

UBC fifth-year senior forward Stephanie Thibert was instrumental in the Thunderbirds taking control of the match early in the first half.

Thibert scored twice (11'), (24'), and crossed to third-year forward Kristen Zoller's goal (18') to give UBC a 3-0 lead at halftime.

UVic fourth-year midfielder Alli Bach scored late into the second half to spoil the cleansheet of UBC fourth-year defender-turned-keeper Jill Kinsman.

Vikes' third-year keeper Kasia Gwiazda made 5 saves on 9 UBC shots and was unfortunate to allow a fourth goal put in by her own sohphomore defender Shayla Behrens attempting to clear a dangerous cross into the box.

The two teams face each other again in a grudge match to complete the home-and-home series on Sep. 22 when the Vikes' host their own home-opener at Centennial Stadium, University of Victoria.

Coming into the second weekend of the season in the Canada West conference with two convincing wins on the road a week earlier, UBC shares the lead in the standings with the University of Manitoba Bisons (3-1) and the Trinity Western University Cascades (3-1).

Trailing by two games, UVic (1-2) has its only of win of the season from a week earlier against lowly University of Regina Cougars (0-4).
