Post-game interview with UBC Thunderbirds' J. Dunnett & D. Mosher

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (2007/10/6) — The University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds lead the women's varsity soccer CIS Canada West Conference with 6 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss midway through the regular-season.

UBC defeated the Trinity Western University (TWU) Spartans 3-0 and University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV) Cascades 2-0 over the weekend home stand at Thunderbird Stadium.

On a rainy Saturday afternoon, the Thunderbirds scored early in the first half against UCFV on goals from rookie midfielder Lisa Furutani in the fourth minute and fourth-year forward Janine Kerr in the 18th minute.

UCFV Cascades' goalkeeper Angela Garriott made 7 saves against UBC in the losing effort while the Thunderbirds' (GK) Jaclyn Dunnett posted her second clean sheet in as many days.

On Friday evening, UBC beat Trinity Western — its strongest rival in the Canada West Conference — with a more patient and efficient attack that scored later into the match on fewer opportunities.

The Thunderbirds struck first in the 42nd minute when Furutani slipped a shot past Spartans' goalkeeper Veronika Rogina from just outside the 6-yard box.

The two sides went on evenly matched for 30 minutes before the Trinity Western attack gave way and UBC put the match away adding another two.

UBC third-year midfielder Sarah Treloar and rookie midfielder Natalie Hirayama scored in the 72nd and 90th minute, respectively: dealing TWU their second loss of the season.

As the highest scoring team in the conference with 26 goals in 8 matches, the Thunderbirds will travel to Calgary and Lethbridge (Oct. 13th & 14th) before returning home to host a four-game home stand to round out the remaining two weeks of the regular-season.

TWU will look to bounce back from the goal-drought through which they suffered two losses at UBC and the University of Victoria (UVic) when they take on the Cascades at UCFV on Oct. 13th.

Canada West Conference standings (as of Oct. 6, 2007):

  1. UBC Thunderbirds: 6W - 1D - 1L = 19 Pts.; 26 GF - 7 GA = +19 G-diff.
