Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (2007/11/10) — The University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds sweep a two-game series against the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV) Cascades with victories of 84-63 (Saturday) and 91-81 (Friday) at War Memorial Gym in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) varsity men’s basketball.

The Thunderbirds saw a breakout performance by third-year newcomer guard Blain LaBranche who led the team with 6 three pointers and an average of 16 points per game over the weekend series.

UCFV was paced by fifth-year senior guard Lee Jackson’s combined 35 points over the two games.

On Saturday, UBC outworked the Cascades on the boards by a 54-30 margin in rebounds.

On Friday, Fraser Valley fought back from a 42-38 halftime deficit to take a 4-point lead momentarily in the fourth quarter before the Thunderbirds rallied for a 18-4 run to close out the game.

With a conference record of 4-1, the Thunderbirds share the lead in the Canada West Pacific Division with the University of Victoria Vikes.

UBC will go on the road to the prairies next weekend taking on the University of Winnipeg Wesmen (Nov. 16) and the University of Manitoba Bisons (Nov. 17).

UCFV returns home to host a two-game series versus the Simon Fraser University Clan (Nov. 16 & 17).
