Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada (2007/10/27) — The University of British Columbia (UBC) Thunderbirds cruise to victory defeating the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Clan 92-55 at West Gymnasium in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) varsity men’s basketball.

Spoiling SFU’s home-opener, UBC took control of the game early by building a 51-28 first half margin shooting at an efficient 63.6% rate from the field.

Fourth-year forward Matt Rachar led the Thunderbirds with a game-high 16 points ahead of teammates sophomore forward Brent Malish (13), sophomore point guard Alex Murphy (12), and third-year guard Brett Leversage (11).

Simon Fraser suffered from a meager offensive output of 16-for-60 field goals, including 1-for-17 three-pointers. SFU was also out-rebounded by UBC 32-16 defensively and 47-35 overall.

Third-year guard Sean Burke scored a team-high 12 points and 7-for-8 free throws for the Clan.

Up next for the Thunderbirds is a two-game road swing in Alberta versus the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (Nov. 2) followed by the University of Calgary Dinos (Nov. 3).

Over the same weekend, SFU will continue vying for its first win of the season playing away against the University of Brandon Bobcats (Nov. 2), and the University of Regina Cougars (Nov. 3).
