Both of George St-Pierre and Matt Hughes deserve for this fight to be scheduled for 5 rounds because it should be for the title. Originally Matt Serra was scheduled for this fight but had to opt out due to injury, thus ruining quality reality television. St-Pierre steps in on late notice knowing that he should have the title right now - if not for the round 1 beat down by the “less skilled” Serra.
Picking the winner of this fight, you have to consider the UFC betting odds. Georges St-Pierre (moneyline=-240, over/under=1.5,-180) is the clear favorite against Matt Hughes (moneyline=190, over/under=1.5,-180). If you are one of those guys who looked like a genius by picking Serra before and think this could be another good bet I say “no way” - you simply got lucky last time. This time around, we will see a very focused Georges St-Pierre.
That’s right people; it’s time we all drink the “Rush” juice. He is hitting his prime right now. He is the most talented fighter around. He is even faster now than the last time he fought Hughes and Hughes is slower.
The first time these 2 fighters met 3 years ago, St-Pierre was inexperienced and Hughes won by tap out (armbar). If he wants to win again, he better hope it’s on the ground. A year ago these 2 fought again and the more confident St-Pierre methodically destroyed Hughes one lightning kick/hit after another. One well-defended take down after another, St. Pierre recorded a TKO with 1:25 left in the second round. I don’t see this fight getting out of the 3rd round. Possibly Hughes could drag it out and wear down St-Pierre, hoping to get him stuck under the Matt Hughes backhand.
But really, Hughes is not going to like what this fight could reveal about his status at the top.
In their last fight Hughes smiled most of the first round with every punch he took to the face or kick to the leg. When he got stuck with the punch just before the bell that ended, there was no more smiling.
A focused, determined Matt Hughes will put up a smart, steady and careful fight. Georges St-Pierre will overwhelm him physically and win on a TKO.
