Uga 7's First Day On The Job

Uga 7, the four-year-old bulldog mascot of the University of Georgia, died Thursday morning in Savannah, Georgia. Uga 7 reportedly died from heart problems.

Uga 7, which is also written as Uga VII, has been the team's mascot since 2008, replacing his father Uga VI. In honor of the memory of Uga VII, the team will place a wreath on Uga VII's doghouse near the stadium's east end zone.

Frank W. “Sonny” Seiler, whose family has owned all Uga mascots, has said that a new Georgia mascot will not be named until the new year. Seiler's family has looked after the Georgia mascot for decades in Savannah, bringing the dog to all UGA home games in Athens.

As for Uga VII, he will be interred with other mascots under the stands behind the west endzone. All seven of Georgia's mascot have come from the same family. Uga I became the UGA mascot back in 1956.

Over the years, Uga I and all her descendants have become celebrities in Georgia. Uga V appeared in the Clint Eastwood film Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and even appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

The Uga mascots were the subject of the 2004 documentary Damn Good Dog.

As a Bulldog owner and lover this is a sad thing.  I am an Auburn fan and my heart goes out to all the UGA fans and lovers of your beloved friend and mascot. Even though he has a history of biting Auburn players I will be looking forward to celebrating Uga VII's heir with the Ga nation.  Go Dawg!
