UNC Gives The "Phat 5" 22-Straight Final Fours,1988-2009
The year was 1988 a great time for college basketball and the start of the "Final Four Streak" for the 5 winningest college basketball programs of all-time Kentucky, N. Carolina, UCLA, Kansas, and Duke.
Danny Manning led the #6 seed Kansas Jayhawks to the 1988 National title the lowest seed ever to win. Duke joined KU at the '88 Final Four as the streak would continue all the way to 2009.
The "Final Four Streak" has endured 5 Presidents (R. Reagan, G. Bush, B. Clinton, G.W. Bush, B. Obama) , and the current 44th President who's the first African-American to be Commander-In-Chief.
The "Phat 5" has won 10 of the 21 National Championships during the streak and can make it a very impressive .500 record 11 for 22 with wins by N. Carolina at this weekends Final Four and Monday's National Championship game in Detroit.
The Kentucky Wildcats today formally announced John Calipari as their new head basketball caoch. The addition of Calipari makes The "Phat 5" circle of coaches the strongest its ever been since the streak began in 1988.
2010 looks like a lock with Calipari in the mix for a 23rd straight Final Four for The "Phat 5." P-H-A-T 5 is an acronym that means Producing, History At the Tournament for the 5 winningest college basketball programs of all-time.

Unlike pro sports, where a lower finish gives you a lottery pick (a first overall, or high first round entry draft pick) a record like that gives the Phat 5 a decided recruiting advantage. Until Calipari gets Kentucky going again it will probably be up to the Phatter 4 of the 5 to keep the streak going for the next two years.
