The year was 1988 a great time for college basketball and the start of the "Final Four Streak" for the 5 winningest college basketball programs of all-time Kentucky, N. Carolina, UCLA, Kansas, and Duke.

Danny Manning led the #6 seed Kansas Jayhawks to the 1988 National title the lowest seed ever to win. Duke joined KU at the '88 Final Four as the streak would continue all the way to 2009.

The "Final Four Streak" has endured 5 Presidents (R. Reagan, G. Bush, B. Clinton, G.W. Bush, B. Obama) , and the current 44th President who's the first African-American to be Commander-In-Chief.

The "Phat 5" has won 10 of the 21 National Championships during the streak and can make it a very impressive .500 record 11 for 22 with wins by N. Carolina at this weekends Final Four and Monday's National Championship game in Detroit.

The Kentucky Wildcats today formally announced John Calipari as their new head basketball caoch. The addition of Calipari makes The "Phat 5" circle of coaches the strongest its ever been since the streak began in 1988.

2010 looks like a lock with Calipari in the mix for a 23rd straight Final Four for The "Phat 5." P-H-A-T 5 is an acronym that means Producing, History At the Tournament  for the 5 winningest college basketball programs of all-time.

The "Phat 5" Final Four Teams 1988-2009:

1988- Kansas, Duke. Kansas won the Championship.

1989- Duke, lost in the National semi-final. 

1990- Duke, the Blue Devils lost the Championship game to UNLV.

1991- Duke, Kansas, N. Carolina. Duke beat Kansas to win Championship.

1992- Duke,  the Blue Devils beat Michigan for the Championship for back-to-back titles.

1993- N. Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, UNC beat Michigan for the Championship.

1994- Duke, the Devils lost to Arkansas in the Championship game.

1995- UCLA, N. Carolina, the Bruins beat Arkansas for the Championship.

1996- Kentucky, UK won the Championship beating Syracuse.

1997- Kentucky, N. Carolina, the Wilcats lost to Arizona in the Championship game.

1998- Kentuck, N. Carolina, UK beat Utah in the Championship game.

1999- Duke, the Blue Devils lost to Connecticut in the Championship game.

2000- N. Carolina, UNC lost in the National semi-final.

2001- Duke, beat Arizona in the Championship game.

2002- Kansas, KU lost in the National semi-final.

2003- Kansas, the Jayhawks lost to Syracuse in the Championship game.

2004- Duke, lost in the National semi-final.

2005- N. Carolina, UNC beat Illinois in the Championship game.

2006- UCLA, the Bruins lost to Florida in the Championship game.

2007- UCLA, the Bruins lost to in the National semi-final.

2008- Kansas, N. Carolina, UCLA, Kansas beat Memphis in the Championship game.

2009- N. Carolina, UNC will face Villanova Saturday April 4, 2009 in one of two National seni-final games.

There has been at least one "Phat 5" program in 16 of the 21 (76%) National Championship games during the remarkable streak 1988-2009.
