Maryland Terrapins Fans Storm Route 1 After Duke Win, But Did Police Stop Riot or Make It Worse?

University of Maryland basketball fans got a little carried away last night after the Terrapins win over Duke University. After the win, which put Maryland into a first-place tie with Duke atop the Atlantic Coast Conference, fans flooded the streets of College Park, Maryland in a celebration that police believed evolved into a riot.

Police arrived on the scene using pepper spray to clear the streets. Police helicopters, police paddy wagons, and an armored car were also on the scene.

Students have been known for years to head out onto to Route 1 after big wins. Years ago, students damaged local businesses, smashing storefront windows.

Some students celebrating the Maryland-Duke win thought the police went too far.

Eric Nathan, 21, a senior from Columbia, said students were behaving well on Route 1 when police "started attacking people."

"It was really incomprehensible because it was . . . totally unprovoked," Nathan said.

Police, however, stated that the Maryland crowd was out of control and were forced to take action as fans threw projectiles at police.

I graduated in 1983. It is true that when there is a Big Win or a Terrible Loss, the students rush Rte. 1 to celebrate or lick their wounds. It is tradition. It is normal behavior for any rabid sports fan. (Hey: Did you see the people of Canada rush the streets after the win over the US in Hockey?  No riots, just dancing in the streets!) It happens. Traditions can be good for nurturing loyalty, selling TERP gear, tix, and raising $$. The University and the City of College Park make a fortune off it every other day of the year. Watchin gthe coverage of these events, it seems to me that the reason these events turn out to be complete riots out of control is  1) The University doesn't host a bonfire on the grounds of Frat Row, under the direct control and supervision of the CP Fire Dept. which is located right there! 2) The police come in donning riot gear, with tanks, and thumping their shields taunting the students, basically daring them to make the next move and moving in if they don't--saw it on the news with my own eyes, and 3) this generation has very little respect for authority let alone themselves (I mean, F Duke loud and clear on ESPN???  Thanks. You make us all soooo proud!  You are devaluing your own degrees!  Not to mention the sheer rudeness of inflicting that on future Terps (the children of fellow fans) making them hear and see your behavior!  This school is not JUST yours... many came before and many will still come afterwards.  Your behavior is embarassing.  Just wait til you have kids and some 20 year old's self-centered rude behavior compromises their ears and eyes!)  Wait til people say to you in job interviews "Oh, you went to MD?  Ok, well we're not interested because you don't know how to conduct yourselves there!" We (the Alum) need a Solution to prevent the UMD "Children" from rioting: The University and Frat Row need to organize a Bonfire on the grounds of the horseshoe, so all that pent up jubilation, or distress, has a structured place to be released, and the police wouldn't create or have such a problem to tend with. The College of Engineering could build it! Tuition and athletic fees are literally about 1,000 percent higher than when I went there, so the University could more than adequately pay for the event, and any insurance rider. This typically happens after late nite games... If there was a watermain break on Rte 1 CP would close the road and detour traffic. The same should be done, easily for the student body that keeps this city afloat. Go Terps! (And excercise some class when it comes to cursing in public. It's sooooo beneath a MD alum, which hopefully you will become!)
