UPDATE: Steven Gerrard has now been charged with assault.

The 28-year-old England star and two other men will appear in court next month over an alleged brawl in Southport, Merseyside, in the early hours of Monday morning, which stemmed from an argument over music.

Marcus McGee, a 34-year-old father-of-two, needed four stitches to his head and lost a tooth in the incident at The Lounge Inn bar and restaurant where Gerrard and a group of friends were celebrating Liverpool's 5-1 win over Newcastle United on Sunday in which he scored twice.

Original story:

Only hours after steering his Liverpool side to a 5 - 1 victory over Newcastle United England and Liverpool soccer superstar Steven Gerrard was arrested for an alleged assault on a man in Southport.

Gerrard is one of soccers greatest stars and his arrest will shock fans around the world.

England and Liverpool footballer Steven Gerrard is under arrest following an assault at a nightclub.

Police were called to the Lounge Inn in Southport, Merseyside after reports of a disturbance at 0230 GMT. Six men were detained later in a nearby street.

The men, four from Huyton, one from Formby and one from Litherland, remain in police custody.

A 34-year-old man from Southport was taken to hospital with facial injuries, not thought to be life-threatening.

The incident is alleged to have taken place at the restaurant and bar - which turns into a nightclub - on Bold Street.

I'm wondering how this will affect his career if found guilty.

For the man who always does his talking on the foorball pitch, I hope this doesn't knock his career off track. He is without doubt, one of the most talented players in the world at the moment.
I have a ticket for the Preston North End v Liverpool FA 3rd round game on 3rd January and, as a Preston fan, I will be gutted if he cant play.

Story updated - Gerrard now charged with assault.

He should be forced to play the full 90 minutes against Preston as a punishment, man marking your hardest player :-)

A lawyer has just been on BBC News and says that someone of "good character" should not receive a custodial sentence. I also I hope this doesn't affect his career, but there should be no special treatment. A hefty five figure fine from law & club? And a few hundred hours community service? Teaching youngsters in Preston, Newcastle and Carlisle how to play?

Good idea - community service - get him out in the community if found guilty - but lets not judge too soon.

I'm afraid it's prison, no question - he wouldn't have been charged without a strong case and probably CCTV to back it up. An example will be made.

he won't get a custodial sentence, he'll have been charged with a section 20 (grevious bodily harm) which if he pleads guilty, will more likely than not be dropped to Actual bodily harm, the guilty plea itself will be taken into all account, plus the fact his lawyer'll be one of the greatest brains in english legal history (lets face it, the mans so rich he could start his own football team) so a good lawyer wont be too much trouble, as for the fine, because of his income and social standing, you're probably looking somewhere in the region of 10-15 thousand pounds in compensation, plus he'll be ordered to pay 60 pounds in court charges (not a great deal to this man) the actual punishment could be anything from a Unpaid work order, to a Custodial suspension, but as a first offender, clearly intoxicated, he WON'T go to prison, the judge won't treat him any different than anybody else (just hope he's not an everton fan)

aiyoo stevennn why la macha you go and do this. all this because of DRINK. How many times your mother told you not to go and drink with those fellas. they are nothing but trouble. its ok if we are 15 points ahead in the PL but with all the games coming up...aiyoo...i told u not to DRINK so much, just have a few pegs and go home to your wife, why you have to go and get into trouble with those fellas, you know those fellas are always looking for trouble.  Just because Benitez is sick doesnt mean you can go out and do your own thing. I dont know if you are going to go to jail or not, will have to wait next month.

Steven has my full backing and im sure liverpool and all of the fans will support him through this difficult time and hopefully it will not affect his wonderful career which he has worked so hard for, another point is that the man who was hospitalised is said to have had 4 stitches and a tooth knocked out, 3 men have been charged including gerrard, realistically 3 men would have battered him and probably given him brain damage it couldn't have been a full on brawl in my view.

None of us know the actual full details as Gerrard has not spoken to the media so people shouldnt be so quick to judge and condemn Gerrard. For all we know he could have been set up or severely provoked. Yes, what he did was wrong no question about it, but just because he is in the public eye doesn't mean he can't make mistakes, he is still human. He has mine and all other true Pool fans full backing.

I honestly don't think religion has anything to do with it so really there is no need to bring it up.
