The US Ryder Cup team, without the services of star Tiger Woods, managed to claim an early lead during the first morning of play at the Ryder Cup.

Euros Paul Casey and Henrik Stenson lost 3 and 2 to Justin Leonard and Hunter Mahan of the US. Fellow Americans Stewart Cink and Chad Campbell defeated Justin Rose and Ian Poulter, 1 up. Meanwhile Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim halved with Padraig Harrington and Robert Karlsson. Jim Furyk and Kenny Perry also halved with Spaniard Sergio Garcia and Brit Lee Westwood.

Friday afternoon's pairings consist of:


-Padraig Harrington & Graeme McDowell vs. Phil Mickelson & Anthony Kim

-Ian Poulter & Justin Rose vs. Steve Stricker & Ben Curtis

-Sergio Garcia & Miguel Angel Jimenez vs. Justin Leonard & Hunter Mahan

-Lee Westwood & Soren Hanson vs. J.B. Holmes & Boo Weekley
