Eric Shanteau, an American swimmer, has informed the media that he is battling testicular cancer. He has qualified to be on the US Olympic swimming team and compete in the 200-metre breaststroke just a few weeks ago. Although the cancer is non-malignant, doctors are recommending surgery, but Shanteau is deferring surgery until after the Olympics.

"If I didn't make the team, the decision would have been easy: Go home and have the surgery," Shanteau said. "I made the team, so I had a hard decision. But, by no means am I being stupid about this."

In my view, this is a revelation of true Olympic spirit, and it serves to remind us just how much athletes sacrifice for even the slimmest of chances to compete at the Olympics because of the tremendous respect that they have for the Games. I think we tend to forget the meaning and the true essence of the Olympics amidst all the political and financial infuriation that constantly surrounds the Olympic movement.

Agreed, I think I would do the same thing especially when it is non-malignant. Training for a competition for four years I can imagine is not easy.
