USC Trojans To Be Penalized For Wearing Red Jerseys In Game Against UCLA
The USC Trojans really want to wear their home red jerseys during their game against UCLA this Saturday and they're willing to be penalized for it.
Trojans head coach Pete Carroll told reporters that his team will wear their home red jerseys on Saturday, violating an NCAA rule that requires the road team to wear white jerseys. If the Trojans refuse to comply with the rule, they will lose one timeout in each half.
Carroll hopes that the NCAA will grant his team an exemption to NCAA uniform regulations. If not, Carroll is willing to take such a penalty to help revive an old tradition where both UCLA and USC wore their home jerseys when the two teams meet.
"I've been thinking about it for years. I've been trying to restore it. I always thought it was a really cool tradition," he said. "We're finally going to do it and hopefully start a nice tradition."
Some have questioned Carroll's decision to focus on fashion rather than the game itself. Some have also pointed out that the move could be seen as disrespectful to UCLA, as if to say the Trojans are so good they won't need the extra timeouts to win.
UCLA Rick Neuheisel, for the record, says he likes the idea.
"It's exciting," Neuheisel said. "I think wearing the home jerseys is a great tradition."
