USL Super 20s: Texas Dutch Lions Roar & Out Soar American Eagles
Under the afternoon heat at Woodforest Stadium, the Texas Dutch Lions fought through the soaring temperatures to emerge victorious in a match that would see four goals in the last 10 minutes of play.
With a starting 94 degrees of heat baking down on them, the players were always going to become victims of the Houston weather but after taking a three goal lead in the opening 30 minutes, the Dutch Lions could relax and take the rest of the afternoon in their stride to save burning themselves out for tomorrows visit to Dallas.
Bryan Mann scored the opener for the home side after 17 minutes to settle the nerves which was followed nine minutes later by Oliver Ortiz to double the lead for the Lions before Gideon Pieschel added the teams third on the half hour mark to round of the scoring in the opening half.
The teams emerged for the second half expecting much of the same but it took until the 80th minute before another was scored and it was the visitor's this time to claw a goal back and perhaps give themselves a lifeline into the game but this was short lived as only 60 seconds later the Lions roared back to regain their three goal advantage with a Roberto Valezquez goal to give a 4-2 lead with nine minutes remaining.
The match was hectic at this point; Two goals in the space of two minutes had everyone on edge and this goal glut wasn't to end.
On the 83rd minute the Eagles added yet another goal to the scoreline but in typical Dutch Lions form, they didn't succumb to this pressure and headed back upfield to grab another one for themselves to regain a three goal lead, making the score line 5-2 in their favour.
The goal scoring ended there but special appreciation must go to the over 100 fans that turned out in the blazing heat to watch this one but they didn't leave disappointed.
