Vancouver 2010 One Year Away
As the countdown clock ticked past 365 days Wednesday night celebrations began across the lower mainland and Whistler. The IOC and VANOC planned several events centered around the 2010 Games to get people excited as we reached this milestone.
This morning people in Whistler gathered around as the Olympic Torch was unveiled that will travel 45,000 kilometers across Canada and will be carried by more than 12,000 torchbearers. Television stations scrambled for a good shot of the momentous event only to be blocked by an official Olympic broadcaster that set up their anchor stations right in front of their cameras.
The torch was designed by Bombardier Aerospace and Bombardier Transportation. They will also be designing the cauldrons that will house the flame during the games. Along with the symbolic torch came the HBC designed torchbearers uniform that volunteers will be sporting on their journey across Canada.
Across Canada and around the world Olympic enthusiasts have come together to celebrate. People in London, Tokyo and Beijing recognized the landmark with various events. 150 guests who were involved with the 2008 Games in Beijing were invited to meet the 2010 mascots at the Canadian Embassy.
The official invitations to more than 80 Olympic commitees to compete in Vancouver will be issued tonight at Richmonds Olympic Oval between 5pm and 6pm.
