Thomas Omwenga of Kenya has repeated as winner of the Vancouver Marathon in a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, 57 seconds, seven minutes faster than his winning time from last year. Erick Yator, also of Kenya, finished second in 2 hours 17 minutes.

Mary Akor, of Gardena California, was the winner of Women's Marathon in a time of 2:37.52. This is Akor's second win (she also won in 2004).

The 37th edition of the Vancouver Marathon started under clear and cool skies... which quickly clouded over. More than 12,000 runners, joggers and walkers entered the full and half marathon this year. The staggered start times mean that lead marathon runners have to negotiate the tail end of the half marathon. In addition the course is widely recognized as a difficult and relatively hilly course. The 100 ft elevation gain over the Burrard street bridge at mile 24.5 makes for a good final challenge.

Great! Are you shooting some of these from out of your window?

Today, I was the "man on the street"... until i had to go back up for another battery pack... then I was "man hanging out the window" for a short while.

Great job optic. My girlfriend saw Omwenga run by the Sylvia Hotel from our apartment window. He was met by a loud chorus of cheers, far ahead of the pack.

Great shot of the first place winner! Amazing. I missed seeing him by only a few minutes crossing the finish line. I also didn't realize that there were 12,000 people running. It was a great event to watch as well with lots of places to get good views of the runners.

Thanks, it was tough to see the full marathon runners through the half-marathon crowd, but the leader had a couple of motorcycles to part the sea of runners and encroaching thundersticks.
