Paralympics 2010: Olympic Opening Ceremony Kicks Off in Vancouver: Background, Events, Schedule TV and Online.

For the Vancouver Paralympic Games in 2010 the same level of hype, crowds or attention may not be the same as the Winter Games that just wrapped up but the passion and intensity of competition for the athletes is just the same. The Paralympic Opening Ceremony  kicks off friday with 600 paralympic athletes competing for country, achieving personal bests and experiencing the thrill of international competition in Vancouver.

The 600 Paralympic athletes hail from 45 countries and they will be competing for 333 medals in 64 events.

Paralympic Background

The Paralympic games have come a long way from their humble but inspired origins dating back to just after World War Two.

The Paralympic movement began at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in England the same day the London 1948 Olympics opened. Dr. Ludwig Guttman believed a sports festival would aid patients who lost limbs or were in wheelchairs because of injuries suffered in the Second World War.

The first official Paralympic Games were in Rome after the 1960 Summer Olympics. The winter version debuted in 1976 at Ornskoldsvik, Sweden.

The Paralympic Schedule: Events and TV

The Paralympic Opening ceremony will not be broadcast on TV Friday evening anywhere, but in British Columbia, but will be telecast on Saturday in Canada on the CTV network starting at 2pm EST. NBC will be showing opening ceremony highlights on Saturday as well starting at 1pm EST. Most of the coverage in North America will be packaged high light coverage of the paralympic events. The Paralympic 2010 opening ceremony will be streamed live online

Patrick Roberge said to expect to see 5,000 performers ranging in age from four to 92 on the field at BC Place Stadium. Athletes will join the entertainers in a show that he promised would be 'incredibly family friendly.'

There are a variety of resources to keep track of the paralympic event schedule including theVancouver 2010 site, and the CTV schedule of events

I am excited about the paralympic games, but a little upsete that even the opening ceremony is not even live on tv, almost like they are second rate poeple and atletes. After all it is their game just as much and even more important as it was for the other atletes.

if you were watching CTV you would have seen it live -the whole 2-1/2 hours of it and it was very good

The Opening of the Paralympics should be live on TV.  How disappointing to the athletes and their supporters.  They work just as hard to be the best they can be as any athlete!

I agree with comments above. These Athletes have already achieved far greater challenges than most before they even begin training as an athlete Give them a fair go and televise their achievements just as enthusiastically as the the other athletes.

Apparently, the President of the Paralympic movement has criticized the lack of live coverage of of the Opening Ceremonies.

Not showing the opening ceremony is an overt sign of what CTV thinks of the Paralympics.   Maybe just not enuf advertising $$$$$'s to warrant putting it on.

I really can't believe there is no television coverage of the OPENING CEREMONIES for the paralympics. Come on C.T.V. execs. (in very small print), get off your money horse and show some professionalism. Really!!! You guys suck in the big time.

Are the Paralympics not being brodcasted LIVE???  What is going on?

I'm absolutely saddened that the Paralympics Opening Ceremony isn't broadcast LIVE.  My excitement about watching them was soon dampened by the lack of LIVE LOVE support that CTV's offered these Olympians.  CTV did a fabulous job of covering the Winter Olympics.  How is it that they could fall from grace so drastically?!

This is totally ludicrous that CTV is not broadcasting the ceremonies LIVE.  If CBC had the rights they would have done it for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Guess who I will watch in the future???????

I was shocked and saddened to learn that CTV won't be covering the Opening Ceremonies for the Paralympics LIVE!  They did such a fabulous job of the coverage for the Winter Olympics that I don't understand their lack of support for these Olympians.  These people deserve every ounce of LIVE LOVE support they can get, just as the other Olympians did!  HUGE FALL FROM GRACE CTV :(

My children and I are extremely disappointed that the opening ceremonies are not being covered live. We had planned to watch them this evening to support all our athletes as we did with the 2010 Winter Olympics. My oldest son has cerebral palsy and plays sledge hockey. We are traveling to Buffalo tomorrow and will miss the telecast. I think not airing the opening ceremonies live just reinforces the lack of support we show our para athletes and it doesn't give them much hope. They are the true athletes and we are rooting for them all the way! Go Canada!

I am very disappointed to see that the opening ceremony of the paralympic games will not be televised.  So many of us were on a great high throughout the 2010 Olympic Games and that could be carried over to the paralympics if there was adequate coverage.  Many of us who are not so familiar with these events are looking forward to coverage, therby increasing our awareness of the athletes and their efforts to take part in sports at such a high level.  I hope to see some live coverage of some of the events; otherwise, shame on the media!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! CTV isn't showing it on TV? I'm not going to watch it tomorrow, I want to see it LIVE, This is absolutely rediculous. Instead they put on ctv news, etalk, access hollywood, and ghost whisperer. Great call. Id like to find the people who decide what goes on CTV and find out why they still have their job.

I am also distraught with such little television airing of the Paralympics, plus I don't have fast enough internet to watch it there either.  Rip Off. But, unfortunately, not unexpected.  As a quad I'm used to being stonewalled.

CTV Toronto Schedule for tonight:

9:00 pm - Medium & 10:00 pm - The Brigde : so constructive and inspiring!

I had hoped that Canada would be an example to the world by showing that all the people are equal but I guess CTV doesn't reflect the Canadian ideal.

For live coverage tonight to to paralympicsport.tv

I am so disappointed that only residents in B.C. will receive live coverage of the opening ceremonies. They are not the only people in Canada who want to see this!!

Something I don't understand is why do these networks pay for the rights to transmit the games and then they don't? I am sure the smaller networks would be so happy to air them and we all would be so happy to watch them!

THEY ***ARE*** BEING BROADCAST ON CTV, LIVE, RIGHT NOW.WHERE DID THIS LIE AND RUMOUR COME FROM??TURN ON YOUR TVs.  THEY'RE ON CTV RIGHT NOW, AT 6:15PM VANCOUVER TIME.So many people are going to miss it because you were fed incorrect information.  That's even sadder.

CTV only changed their mind earlier today - up until some time this morning there was no live broadcast planned. And outside of BC, it still isn't being shown live - the rest of Canada will have to watch tape-delayed tomorrow. Thanks to all who made their feelings known and in so doing shamed CTV into going live, at least here in BC.

I am down here in Dawsonville, Ga. and was all geared up to watch the Paralympics, and all I can find is one hour this afternoon on channel WXIA.  So sorry that we aren't getting full covereage of the paralympics.  What inspiration for our children/all children to see those who overcame physical limitations (think of the emotional fortitude displayed), to work and aspire for a better world.  Sure would love to be there to see all the events!!!!  Good Luck all you Gladiators!!!!

I am so angry at the total lack of TV coverage also.  I am disabled myself and am appalled that disabled athletes are treated with so little respect by the TV companies, it's almost like we're second class citizens and therefore not worth bothering about, it stinks!!  I hope the President of The Olympic Committee will make his views public and shame these abysmal TV Companies into showing these wonderful people who go through so much to be where they are. Good luck to all of you, you are all winners in my eyes.

I have been waiting and checking the TV guide for the winter paraolympics.  I saw the opening ceremony and started looking for TV coverage on Sunday.  I looked in our local newspaper, and there was nothing mentioned.  How come I don't get to watch this?  There are many of our Iraq heroes participating and I would like to see these individuals compete.  Hopefully, this will be televised at the next paraolympics.
