Vancouver to Whistler bus drives straight at IOC Sponsorship law
In a direct, albeit tongue-in-cheek challenge to the Olympic Organizing committee a small-time shuttle company has launched an internet marketing campaign that seems to claim that the entire Olympic Games have been brought to you "by Zoomer".
The "brought to you by Zoomer" campaign is slated to kick off in full next week, with Zoomer asking its passengers to shoot and submit videos around Vancouver and Whistler involving a "Brought to you by Zoomer" theme.
On its own YouTube site ZOOMER has uploaded example videos that include random interviews with Russian athletes, an obviously bogus claim that The Olympic Clock is brought to you "by the good folks at Omega, and, of course, The ZOOMER" and a street performer rapping about "The ZOOMER, the ZOOMER, the ZOOMER, the fastest way to travel between Whistler and Vancouver."
The ZOOMER is a conglomerate of local commercial carriers who were overlooked for contracts during the pre-Games bidding process.
"Will" a bus driver who runs a small three-bus service with his father, said that The ZOOMER exists for two reasons:
1) Because the local drivers know the best and most hassle free route to travel between Whistler and Vancouver during the Games. "They have turned the bus station into a high security airport-type place for the Olympics," he said. "When people discover that they have to be frisked, have their bags inspected and wait in long line ups before they even have a chance to board their bus, they Will take their money away from the big players and travel with the small, local guys who know.
2) Because we want to enjoy ourselves during the games. "If you look at our videos on YouTube, you'll see that The ZOOMER - which will only exist until the Olympics are over - is clearly not a sponsor of the games. The videos are so stupid and poorly made that there can be no doubting their bogusness." If they (the IOC) want to pay a bunch of lawyers to chase after a company that hardly even exists in the first place then I guess they'll have to spend some of the money they should have contracted out to us in the first place."
These are the Games, after all. The folks at ZOOMER have seen to it that they have well and truly begun.
For those with a soft spot for either the small guys or the pranksters, the Zoomer departs from Granville & Helmcken Streets in Vancouver and is a non-stop service terminating at the Olympic Celebration Plaza in Whistler. $35 for a one way trip.
