Thousands of standing room tickets for Cypress Mountain 2010 Winter Olympics events have been cancelled starting yesterday. VANOC has cancelled the Olympics tickets due to unsafe conditions in the spectator areas as a result of the rain in Vancouver. The standing room areas for viewing events on Cypress have been classified as dangerous, and standing room tickets will not be valid for this reason. This change directly affects attendees of snowboard cross events.

4,000 Olympics tickets for the men's snowboard cross event on Monday were cancelled, as well as another 4,000 tickets for the women's snowboard cross event scheduled for today. While the standing room tickets were cancelled on Sunday by VANOC, many Olympics ticket holders were unaware of the change and showed up at Cypress only to be turned away.

Eight thousand tickets for snowboardcross events -- 4,000 for the men's event Monday and 4,000 for the women's today -- were cancelled late Sunday, and some ticket holders showed up on the mountain Monday to find they couldn't get into the event.

Vanoc is offering refunds to ticket holders, but only for the $50 face value of the tickets and bus reservations, and only to the original buyers. Those who paid higher prices in subsequent sales appear to be out of luck.

The standing room areas on Cypress for viewing of events such as the snowboard cross are supported by straw bails. The problem is that the rain has washed away a lot of the snow that covers the bails, and therefore viewers could slip between them since they're not adequately covered.

Olympics ticket holders for the freestyle skiing aerials events will not be affected by these weather conditions. Attendees with general admission standing-room tickets for such events, as well as grandstand ticket holders ($125) will not have any problems. The freestyle skiing events will be held at a separate Cypress Mountain location.

Snowboard halfpipe events scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday of this week could see more standing room ticket holders being turned away due to the conditions on Cypress. One of the issues is that all of the snow that was flown or trucked in to the mountain is being used on the actual event which takes precedent over the spectator area.

VANOC is assessing the situation on Cypress on a day-by-day basis to determine whether standing room Olympics tickets can be honoured. They will be refunding tickets if the weather issues continue.

West Vancouver, BCGeneral admission standing room tickets (priced at $50) have been cancelled for Olympic men’s and ladies’ snowboard cross events on Monday and Tuesday at Cypress Mountain. Tickets will be refunded, said the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC).
