For amateur boxing in Greater Victoria, the newly formed association on August 31, 1976 would be an important step in Mike Caird's boxing journey from amateur boxer and coach, from the Fifties to 2001,  to his induction into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame on November 21, 2009 at the Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence.

The VAA was formed to replace the London Boxing Club that had been operating since the Sixties, but did not sponsor amateur boxing from 1970 to 1974.  With renewed growth of amateur boxing starting in September 1973, the London Boxing Club renewed it's sponsorship of the sport until June 1976.

In September 1976. the boxing program had three coaches including Mike Caird,  Brian Zelley and recent addition Lou Bujdoso (another former boxer that had fought in the Sixties).  Also, returning from a couple of years in Nanaimo & North Vancouver was "Dynamite" Dan Wright, one of the co-founders of the Nanaimo Boxing Club.

With good support in the form of coaches, an excellent and experienced VAA Board of Directors, and excellent facilities for training and hosting boxing cards, Mike Caird and his team were ready for a positive new beginning in the sport of amateur boxing in Greater Victoria and Vancouver Island.
