Joe Frazier vs Muhammad Ali: The Legends' First Fight

To commemorate the passing of Smokin' Joe Frazier, who died from liver cancer at age 67, we're showing the fight between Frazier and Muhammad Ali.

Billed as "The Fight of the Century", the Muhammad Ali-Joe Frazier fight took place on March 8, 1971 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Joe Frazier beat Muhammad Ali by unanimous decision: it was Ali's first professional loss.

The two legends would meet twice more: on January 28, 1974 at Madison Square Garden, and on October 1, 1975 in Manila, Philippines (The Thrilla in Manila).

Both rematches saw Muhammad Ali beat Joe Frazier: first by decision and then by stoppage after the 14th round. The Frazier-Ali rivalry was characterized by some epic trash talk that surpasses what you hear even today.

Still, after the Thrilla in Manila, Muhammad Ali conceded, "Joe Frazier, I'll tell the world right now, brings out the best in me. I'm gonna tell you, that's one hell of a man, and God bless him."
