Wayne Bridge has just announced that he will not be available for selection for the upcoming friendlies and also has ruled himself out of the World Cup.

In a statement he has said "I have thought long and hard about my position in the England football team in the light of the reporting and events over the last few weeks. it has always been an honour to play for England. However, after careful thought I believe my position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive. Sadly therefore I feel for the sake of the team and in order to avoid what will be inevitable distractions, I have decided not to put myself forward for selection. I have today informed the management of this decision. I wish the team all the very best in South Africa."

In my opinion if Wayne Bridge feels that he isn't professional enough not to let off-field problems affect his onfield performance, then he is not a loss to England. Steven Warnock should now get the place at left back. There are an awful lot of players out there that will consider it an honour to play for England and not a right.

I have always thought that no-one should have the right to resign from the national squad unless it's for injury reasons.

Have to say I think that is nonsense. If the mother of my child had been banging the team captain behind my back I'd be inclined to spend my time beating the cr*p out of him, not playing football. So well done Bridge for being professional enough to recognise that it would be a problem for the England team if he and Terry couldn't come to terms with what has happened just yet.
