Wayne Rooney is likely to miss Manchester United's vital Champions League second leg tie with AC Milan according to manager Alex Ferguson.

The player who has been in top form injured his knee after playing almost the full 90 minutes for England against Egypt last week.

Ferguson believes that the unforgiving Wembley Stadium pitch was a big part in the injury. Ferguson said, "The Wembley pitch has killed him."

United go into the game with a 3-2 advantage, but with Michael Owen out for the rest of the season and Berbatov not in the best of form, if Rooney does not play against AC Milan United's up front options look limited.

The match will be the first time that David Beckham has returned to Old Trafford and it will be interesting to see what reception he gets from the Manchester United fans - the Red Army.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said the Wembley pitch is likely to keep his star striker Wayne Rooney out of Wednesday night’s Champions League tie against AC Milan.

"Wayne is very doubtful for Wednesday," said Ferguson. Ferguson's damning assessment of the Wembley surface is at least being addressed, with a new pitch being laid before the end of the month.

With Michael Owen also ruled out due to injury and Berbatov not firing on all cylinders, United's back room team will be trying their hardest to get Rooney fit for at least part of this important match.
