NP Rank:
Wayne Woodrow Hayes
“Woody” may be gone from this earth, but he has deposited his only begotten son, Coach Jim Tressel.
The first time I saw Woody Hayes was as a student. I was attending a war protest meeting and Coach Hayes visited to make sure none of his players were present. He was conservative.
The next time I “ran” into Coach Hayes was when I was on the track team at Ohio State and decided to take a short cut from the track to the locker room by running across the football field. It was late in the day, and the place was near empty.
All of a sudden I heard a very loud shout, “Get off my grass,” only with an echo, “Gettt off off off my my my grass grass grass!”
Then there was an incident at the Jai Lai restaurant at which I was headed to my seat and Coach Hayes jumped up from his place and pushed his chair back from the table and clipped me, causing me to fall to the ground.
“Clipping, Coach, that will be 15 yards and a free dessert,” I said.
Here he is, Coach Hayes, dotting the “i” in Script Ohio.
