West Indies finally managed to get away from batting first after they won the toss at the Sabina Park, on a pitch with a moist top surface and also cracks. West Indies have had trouble batting first throughout the season, losing six such matches and winning only one. So their decision, when they managed to win the toss, was hardly a surprise.

They made one change to the XI that won the fourth ODI, in Antigua. Adrian Barath replaced Danza Hyatt. India made two changes, leaving out S Badrinath and Praveen Kumar for Shikhar Dhawan and R Vinay Kumar. The return of Dhawan meant that Manoj Tiwary would drop down to the middle order, his natural batting position.

West Indies: 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Adrian Barath, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Marlon Samuels, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Carlton Baugh (wk), 8 Andre Russell, 9 Darren Sammy (capt), 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Anthony Martin.

India: 1 Parthiv Patel (wk), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Manoj Tiwary, 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Suresh Raina (capt), 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Vinay Kumar, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Amit Mishra.
