Westminster Dog Show 2009: Sussex Spaniel Stump Wins Best in Show
In one of the great comebacks in sports history, Stump the Spaniel was named Best In Show at the 2009 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. The 10-year-old is the oldest dog to ever win the show. He is also the first Sussex Spaniel to be named Best in Show.
Stump had recently retired, but like Brett Favre, the lure of competition drew him back to the big stage once more. Unlike Favre, Stump actually won something.
Stump, whose registered name is Ch. Clussexx Three D Grinchy Glee, almost died in 2004 and was saved by a team of vets at Texas A&M.
Stump beat six other group winners, among them Spirit the giant schnauzer; Lincoln, a Brussels griffon; Sadie the Scottish terrier; Conrad, a cord-coated puli; and Tiger Woods (no, not that Tiger Woods), a Scottish deerhound.

It's great that Stump wins, and apparently, the judge did not know how old the winner was!

"Echo' CH Shasta's Espresso To Go is a 3 yr old liver flat-coat retriever. Echo trains and will soon be showing in agility and obedience. She is also training in field work and will probably be earning her Therapy Dog (TDI) certification soon. Echo lives with us and 3 other flatcoats in Sussex County NJ.

I attended the first day of the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Westminster and I was surprised by how nice the dog handlers/owners were. The dogs have to remain at the show all day. The dogs and their owners or handler spend most of the day in the benching area which is open to the public. Everyone was very nice about answering questions about their dogs and their breeds. If you asked, most people were willing to let you touch and photograph the dogs. I have never seen this at other dog shows. It was a really nice experience.

I loved this comeback story. This is a beautiful dog at any age. Great choice on the part of the judges.
