The Pittsburgh Steelers logo is one of the most famous icons in all of sports. But have you ever looked closely at it? Just what exactly is going on there and what does it have to with Pittsburgh or Steelers?

The Steelers logo is base on the Steelmark logo created by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). The original Steelmark featured three star-like symbols (known as hypocycloids) that indicate the qualities of steel: yellow lightens your work, orange lightens your leisure, and blue widens your world. The three stars also represented the materials used to produce steel: yellow for coal, orange for iron ore, and blue for steel scrap.

After being adopted by the Steelers, the three stars took on a new meaning for many fans. To them, the stars represented the city's Three Rivers: the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio.
