London Olympics: Opening Ceremony July 27, 2012

The Opening Ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London takes place on July 27 at 9pm BST ( 4pm ET/1pm PT). The Opening Ceremony is directed by Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting director Danny Boyle. Meanwhile, the IOC is continuing its rich tradition of working with local organizing committees to  enforce sponsor visibility to bizarre degrees.

NBC is live-streaming the Olympics via YouTube, but it isn't free (despite NBC's claims): you'll have to be a cable subscriber to access the video.

Watching the Olympics on television is a bit more straightforward, but you're stuck with whatever each network chooses to broadcast.

  • USA: NBC
  • Canada: CTV, TSN, RDS Réseau des Sports and Réseau Info-Sports, Omni Television, Rogers Sportsnet, OLN
  • Great Britain: BBC
  • Australia: Foxtel, Nine Network
  • New Zealand: Prime, Sky TV
  • South Africa: SABC, SuperSport
  • Olympic Torch Relay: Watch Live

Around 15,000 people will be taking part in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The London 2012 mixtape has already been knocking around online for a while. The best way to watch the Opening Ceremony is with a group: invite your friends over, or go to a sports bar.

Also on July 27, Archery (individual and team) begins with the ranking rounds. Hunger Games fans, Women's Archery begins at 1pm BST (8am ET/5am PT), before the Opening Ceremony.

Women's Soccer has already begun, with hosts Great Britain beating New Zealand 1-0.
