The Whistler Peak 2 Peak Gondola is scheduled to open on December 12, 2008 and the anticipation for this soon to be world recognized tram travelling from mountain to mountain 1,427 feet above the ground is heavily anticipated. Now that the Whistler mountain has opened officially today (Dec 26) we are 15 days and counting down to see the peak 2 peak gondola in action.
The gondola costs $52 million and it will be one of the key tourist attractions come the Olympics. Here are some of the records it has broken: Longest Continuous Lift System, Highest Vertical Point, and Longest Unsupported Freespan.

"This gives you total freedom," she said. "You get to use all the terrain. You get to follow the sun or follow the snow. Or if you just want to ski glades all day, you can use the glades on either mountain. Or if you want to ski bowls all day, you can ski the bowls on either mountain. It gives you this endless choice and infinite possibilities of what you're going to ride that day."

With the two mountains - Blackcomb and Whistler now connected, bloggers are excited about firstly, the season starting, and secondly, what the launch of peak 2 peak will bring. Having both mountains 11minutes away, you can move from mountain to mountain to the best runs available on each. Bidding to be the first one to ride the gondola on December 12th, to a commemorative poster contest, events are launched for the anticipation.
I have seen one of the carts and it is huge, but I shouldn't really be surprised when it carries 28 passengers.

Another way in which IntraWest is killing the "backcountry experience" that they so aggressively sell.
