The 36th annual White Marlin Open is set to take place at Harbour Island Marina in Ocean City, Maryland, August 3-7. It is world's largest billfish tournament with a prize money of $2 million. The winnings are based on competition and weight of the fish. Contestants will compete in white marlin, blue marlin, tuna, dolphin, wahoo and shark fishing categories. The top white marlin prize is estimated to be $1 million. This year 298 boats are registered to compete. There are reports this year's marlin season has not been ideal in Ocean City so far, which might complicate the competition. Moreover, showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the contest.

Each year, more than 300 boats vie for millions of dollars in prize money.  Anglers fish for white marlin, blue marlin, tuna, dolphin, wahoo and shark.
According to tournament organizers, one of the most unique aspects of the White Marlin Open is that anyone can win. Both experienced anglers and novices participate each year. And while the most coveted fish is the winning white marlin, large cash payouts are also made in the blue marlin and tuna categories.
